I if am to be honest, my favourite meal is probably the one that I am closest to sitting down to.However there is something seriously civilised about having people for lunch. There is no washing up at 3 in the morning (for those that can’t sleep knowing of a disaster in the kitchen). No bad nights sleep after having eaten just a little too much and although we all know guests for whom an invitation to lunch is also one for dinner and often breakfast, generally we have the house to ourselves by 6.
Lunch rarely has the stiff formality that an evening dinner can have and there seems to be much less expectation of greatness when you invite people for lunch.Given that, it is often much easier to achieve the wow factor when inviting people for lunch, resulting in the gratuitous praise that is, after all, one of the reasons that we invited people to meals in the first place.
